A Academia da Força Aérea (AFA), é um estabelecimento de ensino superior, e destina-se a formar oficiais para o quadro permanente da Força Aérea e a ministrar cursos que se revelem de interesse para o desenvolvimento dos conhecimentos aeronáuticos a nível nacional.
Criada pelo Decreto-Lei 27/78, de 27 de janeiro, a Academia da Força Aérea (AFA) surge para dar resposta a uma necessidade há muito sentida pela Força Aérea Portuguesa (FAP), de dispor de uma Academia própria, para formar os seus oficiais para o Quadro Permanente (QP).
Com instalações próprias junto à Base Aérea N.º1, na Granja do Marquês, a norte da serra de Sintra, a AFA iniciou as suas atividades no dia 1 de fevereiro de 1978, apenas com os alunos do 3º ano do curso de Aeronáutica Militar, que vieram da Academia Militar, onde até então eram formados todos os oficiais da FAP. Com o desenvolvimento progressivo das suas instalações, foi possível alargar o âmbito da atividade escolar aos restantes cursos, e no ano letivo de 1991/92 iniciaram-se os cursos de Eng.ª Aeronáutica, Eng.ª de Aeródromos, Eng.ª Eletrotécnica e Administração Aeronáutica. Ainda no ano de 1991/92, a Escola Superior de Tecnologias Militares Aeronáuticas (ESTMA), dependente do Comando da AFA, dá início à formação dos Oficiais Técnicos do QP da FAP, ministrando cursos politécnicos.

The Portuguese Air force Academy is an institution of higher education intends to form career officers for the portuguese air Force and provide courses proven to be of interest for the improvement of the aeronautical knowledge at national level.
Created by the decree Law 27/78, published on 27 January, the Air Force Academy, (AFA) arise as an answer to the need of the Portuguese Air Force, of having their own academy to form their own career officers.
With their own facilities attached to the Air Base Number 1, at Granja do Marquês, north from Sintra mountains, the AFA started the activity in February 1st 1978 but only with the 3º year of the military aeronautics course that came from the Military Academy, where, until then all Air Force officers were formed. With the progressive development of their facilities, it was possible to extend the scholar activities to the remainder courses, and in the scholar year of 1991/92 began the courses of aeronautical engineering, aerodrome engineering, eletronic engineering and aeronautical administration. In the same year the Superior School of military aeronautical technologies, under command of AFA, starts the formation of technical officers.
