Fort Series - Fort Houmet Herbe Traditional Geocache

This series is designed to encourage local or visiting cachers to explore and discover the mighty and fascinating fortification remains that are dotted around Alderney’s majestic coastline.

Any exploration should be done with great caution. That said, these cache locations are not too outrageous: The Vlads have been frequenting these spots for years with very little trouble.

Fortification Series – Fort Houmet Herbe

One of four small Forts defending the French-facing coast of Alderney (along with Forts Raz, Quesnard and Hommeaux Florains), Fort Houmet Herbe stands proudly out in the sea. Finished in 1854, this was the only fort on the island where one officer was in charge at any one time. At low tide, you can see the remains of a causeway, which can be followed some of the way before you will have to scramble over some rocks and hoik yourself up into the fort. The fort is now empty and derelict, but great fun to explore, which is recommended, as this is one of our favourite forts. Watch out for the tides, and bring your own pen.
