The landscape facing us is comprised of two types of stone: Armorican sandstone and Brioverian shale. The earlier shale was folded and then became eroded. Sand was then deposited on it to form sandstone. |

Silt accumulated on the sea-bed and then gradually became converted into rock. |

Nearly 540 million years ago, this rock was folded during the formation of the Cadomian chain. Folding caused the strata to be raised at an angle. |
| La mer s'est retirée et les reliefs se sont progressivement érodés. Cette suite d'événements (dépôt de sédiments, plissement, érosion) constitue un cycle orogénique. |

The sea withdrew and the higher ground was gradually eroded. This sequence of events (depositing sediment, folding, erosion) is known as an orogenic cycle. |

Sand was deposited on the eroded rock and eventually this became sandstone. Geologists call this superposition of two layers of rock laid down at different angles a "discordance". |
