Este Power Trail tem por objetivo levar o geocacher a conhecer o bonito trilho que dá a volta à Lagoa das Furnas, bem como as interessantes esculturas em madeira, que se encontram ao longo deste trilho. Estas esculturas (Wood Carving) são da autoria do escultor francês (radicado em Portugal), Emmanuel Courtot.
Ao longo do trilho, poderão encontrar mais de 12 esculturas, bem como o Centro de Monotorização e Investigação das Furnas (CMIF).

No caso de se fazer transportar em viatura poderá parqueá-la no estacionamento das Caldeiras da Lagoa das Furnas.
Este PT é constituído por doze caches (onze tradicionais, mais uma cache Bónus Enigma). Nem todas as caches estão junto às esculturas, devido à existência de outras caches nesta zona, bem como devido, por vezes, à distância entre as próprias esculturas. Todavia em cada cache são disponibilizadas as coordenadas do local de cada escultura.
Ao fazer este PT poderá ainda fazer a cache wherigo “A lenda da Lagoa das Furnas”, que também se encontra ao longo deste trilho.
Ao longo do percurso, também poderão, por vezes, observar interessantes e raras espécies de pássaros migratórios.

WOOD CARVING NA LAGOA DAS FURNAS
Mais de doze esculturas feitas com motosserra em troncos de árvores enraizados espalham-se pelas margens da lagoa das Furnas, nos Açores, produto dos três festivais de «woodcarving», Furnas Woodcarving, organizados pelo Parque Natural de Ilha de São Miguel através do Centro de Monitorização e Investigação das Furnas (CMIF), até 2013. Estas obras são da autoria de Emmanuel Courtot, campeão francês de «chainsaw woodcarving» (escultura em madeira com motosserra). O WoodCarving com motosserra, é um evento inserido no Plano de Ação da Carta Europeia do Turismo Sustentável (CETS) Terras do Priolo, A Carta Europeia de Turismo Sustentável (CETS) é uma ferramenta de gestão em áreas protegidas cujos principais objetivos são aumentar a consciencialização e o apoio às mesmas como parte fundamental da nossa herança coletiva e melhorar o seu desenvolvimento considerando as necessidades do ambiente, dos residentes, empresas locais e visitantes.
Além das peças feitas em árvores enraizadas, Courtot fez outras em troncos cortados, como aconteceu também nos últimos anos. A escolha das esculturas foi feita entre o artista e os responsáveis pelo Centro de Monitorização e Investigação das Furnas. Em 2012, por exemplo, a «aposta» foi para a fauna dos Açores, como um furão, um mocho ou um garajau a apanhar uma carpa.
As esculturas são feitas, essencialmente, em troncos de árvores que estão mortas, por norma criptomérias, e acácias, esta última uma espécie invasora que causa alguns problemas ambientais, por ter raízes pouco profundas e haver tendência para provocar derrocadas nos locais em que é dominante. No caso das esculturas em troncos enraizados, as madeiras são tratadas com óleo de linhaça e xilofene (por causa dos insetos), para durarem alguns anos.
Além de tentar promover «os valores cénicos» da lagoa criando «novas peças e pontos de interesse», principalmente ao longo das margens, estes festivais de 'woodcarving' têm ainda como objetivo atrair mais visitantes ao Centro de Monitorização e Investigação das Furnas.
Paisagem Protegida das Furnas
Inserida no Parque Natural de São Miguel, a Paisagem Protegida das Furnas integra uma área aproximada de 3150 hectares, com características geomorfológicas e hidrológicas específicas e uma singularidade: situar-se no interior de uma caldeira resultante do colapso da estrutura de um dos vulcões mais ativos da ilha de São Miguel, o vulcão das Furnas.
Na singularidade desta paisagem destacam-se a Lagoa das Furnas, a fisiografia acidentada e os fenómenos de vulcanismo secundário, tais como campos fumarólicos e nascentes de águas termais.
Com o intuito de disciplinar os usos nos limites definidos e, com isso, reverter o processo de eutrofização da massa de água, o Governo dos Açores desenvolveu o Plano de Ordenamento da Bacia Hidrográfica da Lagoa das Furnas (POBHLF) tendo adquirido, no âmbito da sua implementação, os terrenos agrícolas que, em larga medida, contribuíam para o escoamento de fertilizantes e estrume animal para a lagoa.
Ainda decorrente da implementação do POBHLF e no âmbito do projeto de requalificação das margens da Lagoa das Furnas, surge o Centro de Monitorização e Investigação das Furnas (CMIF), enquanto observatório e centro de divulgação integrado do conhecimento daquele local.
Localizado na margem sul da lagoa, dispõe de uma área de visitação onde é disponibilizada informação sobre o trabalho desenvolvido, quer na vertente do Parque Natural de São Miguel, quer no caso concreto de implementação do POBHLF, com recurso a suportes interativos e multimédia que permitem ao visitante “viajar” pelo património natural do Vale das Furnas, dando a conhecer a sua geologia e vulcanismo, os ecossistemas lacustres e limnologia, a hidrópole, flora e fauna nativas.

PT 2 – LIZARD
This Power Trail aims to bring the geocacher to know the beautiful trail that goes around the Lagoa das Furnas, as well as the interesting wood carvings, which lie along it. These sculptures (Wood Carving) are designed by the French sculptor (based in Portugal), Emmanuel Courtot.
Along the trail you may find more than 12 sculptures, as well as the Research and Monotoring Furnas Centre (CMIF).

In case you´re moving by car you may park it in the parking lot at Furnas´s Lake boilers.
The PT is composed of twelve caches (eleven traditional chaches plus a bonus Enigma cache). Not all caches are near the sculptures, due to the existence of other caches in the area and because sometimes the distance between their own sculptures. However in each cache there are provided the coordinates of the location of each sculpture.
By doing this you can also make the PT Wherigo cache " Furnas Lake´s Legend ", which also lies along the trail.
Along the way, one may also observe interesting and rare species of migratory birds sometimes.
This PT was developed with the support and in interrelation with the Furnas Monitoring and Research Center.
WOOD CARVING AT FURNAS LAKE
More than a dozen sculptures made with chainsaw in trunks rooted trees are scattered along the banks of the pond Furnas, Azores, product of the three 'woodcarving' festivals Woodcarving Furnas, organized by the Natural Park of São Miguel and the Furnas Monitoring and Research Center (CMIF) in 2013. These works are by Emmanuel Courtot, French champ 'chainsaw woodcarving "(wood carving with chainsaw). The chainsaw woodcarving, is entered in the Action Plan of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (CETS) Lands of Priolo, event The European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (CETS) is a management tool in protected areas whose main objectives are to increase awareness and supporting them as a fundamental part of our collective heritage, aswell as enhance their development considering the needs of the environment, residents, local businesses and visitors.
In addition to the parts made on rooted trees , Courtot did cut in other trunks , as occurred in recent years . The choice of the sculptures was made between the artist and those responsible for the Monitoring and Research Center of Furnas, in 2012, for example, the ' bet ' was for the Azorean fauna, as a ferret , an owl or an garajau to catch a carp .
The sculptures are made primarily on the trunks of trees that are dead, normally cedar and acacia, the latter an invasive species that cause some environmental problems, have shallow roots and that it tends to cause landslides in places where it is dominant. In the case of sculptures in rooted trunks, the woods have been treated with linseed oil and xilofene ( because of the insects ), for the last few years.
Besides trying to promote "the scenic values” pond creating “new parts and points of interest”, particularly along the margins , these festivals “woodcarving” still aim to attract more visitors to the Furnas Monitoring and Research Center.
Protected Landscape Furnas
Inserted in the Natural Park of São Miguel, the Protected Landscape Furnas integrates an approximate area of 3150 hectares, with specific geomorphological and hydrological characteristics and uniqueness: lie inside a boiler resulting from the collapse of the structure of one of the most active volcanoes the island of São Miguel, Furnas volcano.
The uniqueness of this landscape stand out from the Lagoa das Furnas, the rugged physiography and the phenomena of secondary volcanism, such as fumarolic fields and of the thermal springs.
In order to discipline uses the defined limits and thereby reverse the process of eutrophication of the water body, the Regional Government has developed the Spatial Plan of the River Basin of Lagoa das Furnas ( POBHLF ) having acquired within the implementation, farmlands that largely contributed to the runoff of fertilizers and animal manure lagoon.
Also deriving from the implementation of POBHLF and within the redevelopment project margins of Lagoa das Furnas, Furnas Monitoring and Research Center (CMIF) arises as observatory and integrated center of knowledge dissemination that location.
Located on the south bank of the pond, features a visitation area where information is available about their work, both in terms of the Natural Park of S. Miguel, both in the case of implementation of POBHLF, using interactive media and multimedia features that allow visitors to "travel" the natural heritage of Furnas´s Valley, making known its geology and volcanism, the lake and limnology ecosystems, hydrological, native flora and fauna.
