This cache is placed as part of the
Crystal Lake 100-Years Geocoin Challenge created to celebrate Crystal Lake's centennial anniversary of incorporation (1914-2014). The Challenge will take you throughout the city where you will discover twelve (12) hidden caches and explore some Crystal Lake history along the way. Historical Society
This cache is located in the historic Union Cemetery which was created in 1888. The two villages, then known as Crystal Lake and Nunda each contributed $750 to purchase 10 acres of land needed for public burial ground. The following year, a monument featuring a Union Soldier statue was erected to honor veterans of the Civil War and now serves as a memorial to veterans of all wars.
Over the years, the zinc soldier's condition was deteriorating causing him to lean backwards. In 2006, he was taken down to be restored. The Crystal Lake Historical Society spent six years raising funds for the restoration which included replacing his interior support system and constructing a new rifle to replace the original one that had been vandalized years ago. The soldier was returned to his place atop the monument in 2012.
Each side of the monument names four major Civil War battles: Gettysburg, Stone River, Vicksburg, and Shiloh. The names of 379 area veterans and their military units are inscribed on the memorial, including veterans who served, died, or were taken prisoner during the Civil War, and surviving area veterans of the War of 1812. Cemetery hours are 7:00am to 8:00pm April through September, and 7:00am to 5:00pm October through March. Please be respectful of the cemetery grounds, occupants and other visitors. In heading to the final, you'll be able to stay on the paved roadway, then walk along the outskirts without having to pass through gravesites.
