Com o Terramoto de 1755 e o Tsunami logo a seguir, entrando pela terra adentro, grande parte da então Vila Nova de Portimão desapareceu, e com ela vestigios históricos que poderiam atestar a sua antiguidade e alguns pontos de interesse acerca da sua longa história.
No entanto uma das lembranças históricas que permanece é a Barca de Portimão.
Onde hoje se localiza a zona ribeirinha de Portimão, e a actual ponte rodoviária, existiu desde 1466 e durante 400 anos uma barca que unia as duas margens do Rio Arade.
Para efectuar a passagem bastava pagar ao barqueiro em moedas a portagem, sendo normal as pessoas menos abastadas o fazerem através de géneros.
Junto á Barca estava na altura a muralha que rodeava a vila, e uma das mais importantes portas, a Porta da Ribeira, infelizmente nenhuma delas resistiu o terramoto e os poucos troços de muralha que resistiram encontram-se hoje a servir de parede em algumas das casas, sendo ainda possível vê-las em alguns estabelecimentos comerciais da zona antiga da cidade.
Com a construção da ponte a Barca foi desactivada, e onde ela parava é hoje uma praceta junto à Rua da Barca, é nesta zona da cidade que hoje em dia é possível experimentar a melhor gastronomia da Cidade e da Região.
