A Igreja de Santo Ildefonso, matriz de Almodôvar, é um edifício monumental, erguido em finais do século XVI. Veio substituir um templo primitivo, que pertenceu ao padroado real, e que D. Dinis doou à Ordem de Santiago em 1297. Esta origem remota permite entender melhor a dedicação a Santo Ildefonso, santo hispânico do período visigótico, cujo antigo culto poderá ter sido recuperado para ajudar a integrar as populações no quadro territorial pós-reconquista. A ruína do edifício original terá levado à reconstrução, cujo projecto ficou a cargo do arquitecto régio Nicolau de Frias, embora tenha sido terminado pelo pedreiro Domingos Moreira, a partir de 1592.
A igreja, embora construída no final de Quinhentos, revela muitas soluções arquitectónicas típicas de meados do século. É uma igreja-salão, tipologia comum aos templos alentejanos da época, composta por três naves abobadadas à mesma altura, apoiadas em seis grossas colunas com severos capitéis toscanos. A capela-mor quinhentista foi mandada demolir por D. João V, em 1747, por se encontrar arruinada, e não ser considerada suficientemente imponente para o templo. A nova abside foi construída de imediato, com tribuna. Desta campanha barroca fazem também parte os retábulos dos altares laterais, do entalhador eborense Sebastião de Abreu do Ó.
As fachadas são austeras, sendo a principal ladeada originariamente por duas torres sineiras, uma das quais foi destruída por um raio no século XVIII. Nela estava instalado o relógio da vila, que hoje se encontra numa torre isolada, noutro ponto da vila. A torre que ainda se conserva foi igualmente atingida por um raio, desta feita em 1972, mas foi imediatamente recuperada.
Pela sua monumentalidade, valor arquitectónico e interesse decorativo, esta igreja apresenta -se como uma das mais importantes do Baixo Alentejo.

The Church of Saint Ildefonso, Mother Church of Almodovar, is a monumental building, erected in the late sixteenth century. It replaced a primitive temple, which belonged to the royal patronage, which D. Dinis had donated to the Order of Santiago in 1297. This remote origin allows to better understand the devotion to Saint Ildefonso, hispanic saint of the Visigothic period, whose ancient cult may have been recovered to help integrate the populations in the territory after the reconquest. The ruin of the original building led to reconstruction, whose draft was made by the royal architect Nicolau de Frias, although it was finished by the mason Domingos Moreira, from 1592.
The church, though built in the late fifteenth century, reveals many typical architectural solutions from the mid-century. It is a church-hall, common typology to Alentejo temples of the time, consisting of three vaulted naves of the same height, supported in six thick columns built in Tuscan order. D. João V, in 1747, ordered that the fifteenth century chancel should be demolished, due to be in ruins and not be considered sufficiently imposing to the temple. The new apse was built immediately, with tribune. From the baroque campaign are also the side altars altarpieces made by Évora's engraver Sebastian Abreu do Ó.
The facades are austere, the main originally flanked by two bell towers, one of which was destroyed by lightning in the eighteenth century. In the destroyed tower was the clock of the village, which is nowadays is located in an isolated tower, elsewhere in the village. The remaining tower was also damaged by a lightning in 1972, but was immediately recovered.
For its monumentality, architectural value and decorative interest, this church presents itself as one of the most important of the Lower Alentejo Province.
