This is one of ten caches placed for the 2014 Cache Across Maryland. Each location was picked specifically to give cachers a taste of the state and show you its beauty. By combining all ten, you'll be able to see why Maryland is truly "America in Miniature". We hope you enjoy them!
Swallow Falls State Park is located nine miles north of Oakland, Maryland and contains some of Maryland's most breathtaking scenery. Tall hemlocks dominate the silent woods. The Youghiogheny River flows along the park's borders, passing through shaded, rocky gorges and creating rippling rapids. Muddy Creek Falls is a crashing 53-foot waterfall – a spectacular sight. There is an earthcache, GC1H890, Maryland’s Highest Waterfall, at the falls. In addition, GCN33T, CAM 2005 - Swallow Falls, is located on the other side of the Youghiogheny River. Swallow Falls is also famous for having three famous Americans, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone camp here in 1921.
Muddy Creek has its beginnings in the Cranesville Artic Swamp about 6.5 miles northwest of its juncture with the Youghiogheny River. The geocache, a white-painted ammo can, is within 40 feet from Muddy Creek. In the winter, with snow on the ground, expect the terrain rating to increase to a 3.5.
This geocache has been approved by the Maryland DNR. Swallow Falls is open from sunrise to sundown. Please no night caching! Important note: start your journey at the parking waypoint, N 39 30.030 W 079 25.287, cache is a 800 foot walk/bushwhack on unmarked deer trails. After you located the CAM cache, be sure to make your way over to the waterfall, reference points provided in the additional waypoints.
