This section of Highway 1 was recently shut down, replaced by the Tom Lantos Tunnels for traffic heading between San Francisco and the coast towards Half Moon Bay. The final straw for this strip of road was its near-collapse and shutdown after a big rainstorm in April, 2006. The road was rebuilt, strengthened and reopened after several months, but the writing was on the wall (cliff). The tunnels were dug then opened in 2013. Instead of destroying the highway, the authorities are turned it into a coastal walking and bicycling trail with spectacular views of the ocean, cliffs, and rocks below. You may have traveled this section of road many times by car or motorcycle, now come to see it at a walking/bicycling pace.
Really good spot for a photo op.
The Devil’s Slide cache is a bit of a walk to get to from either of the nearby parking lots, and there are some small-ish up and down slopes. The cache itself is just on the side of the road/walkway and reachable with feet on the pavement. The cache itself is a small Lock-n-Lock.
