About SideTracked

We have Motorway Mayhem. We have A-Road Anarchy. But what about public transport users? SideTracked Caches are intended to provide quick Cache-and-dashes at Train Stations.

West Runton Station

Overshadowed on one side by Cromer station, and on the other side by Sheringham station, the humble halt at West Runton is a rather unexpected survivor of the once extensive Midland and Great Northern Joint network.

The station has won many awards and these are displayed on the platform.

In the summer the common is a nice place to stop for lunch.  Retting  Pond on the common is believed to have been created  in the 16th century as one of a number of retting ponds in the area. Retting is the soaking of the stalks of flax and hemp to remove the fleshy parts which were then woven into fabric, rope and sail cloth for use in the village.  The pond is now home to water hens, and swallows and house martins can be seen in the early summer collecting mud for their nests.

There is very little parking at the station but a layby to the south, and adjacent to the common, will provide you with 30 minutes of free time – plenty I hear you say (certainly enough to find this cache).  You are looking for a nano placed near the Railway boundary but on the common next to it.
