The church of St. Paul at Whiteshill was consecrated in 1841 as a chapel of ease to Stroud parish church with the cost met by subscriptions and private benefactions.
In 1844, the church was assigned ecclesiastical district and the living endowed as a perpetual curacy to which the bishop nominated.
A glebe house, in Cotswold style, was built by subscription in 1845 on the west side of the road at the Plain and it was replaced as the vicarage in the mid 20th century by a house further down the hill on the east side of the road.
The church, desined by Thomas Foster in consistently Romanesque style, originally comprised tower, nave and sanctuary with rounded apse. Transepts were added in 1881.
Murals of the apostles in the sanctuary, painted by Misses E.R. and R.E. Standon of Upfield, Paganhill were completed in 1905.
