NICHE OF THE PILGRIM - VÁRZEA
Lenten pilgrimages of the island of Sao Miguel
At the time of Lent , many groups of men who join and leave from his parish for a pilgrimage around the island of St. Miguel , praying for themselves or others .... Anyway , praying for the whole world .... In reality these Groups of Pilgrims formed by Homend of Faith , " put " the whole island to pray. The Groups are made by men of all ages , professions and social classes , which are treated as " brothers " and that act between them as brothers indeed.
In the months before the Pilgrimage , these groups of men flock to several times a week to prepare his Pilgrimage .
The pilgrimage lasts eight days ( in the weeks of Lent ) , usually from Saturday morning until the evening following Saturday, the Pilgrims walking all day , praying and singing . The start is before dawn, occuring very early ( depending on the day ), around four / five in the morning and ends often already dark at night, at around eighteen / nineteen hours ( or later if necessary . .. ).
At night and on arrival to the parish where they will be welcomed , usually the Pilgrims participating in the Eucharist this parish are collected and then, in pairs, in-house individuals and families who, in most cases, do not know them. This collection is usually organized by the Parish Pilgrims Group when it exists .
Also note that for some years there has also been existing Groups of Pilgrims on the islands of Graciosa and Terceira. There are also Pilgrimages, a day whose ranch is composed entirely of women.
Exist in S. Miguel currently over fifty Pilgrims Groups.
The Pilgrims intend to visit during his pilgrimage, the largest number of churches, hermitages and chapels, especially dedicated to Our Lady .
In a Pilgrim Group there are several " functions ", namely:
- MASTER - responsible for the Ranch
- VS MASTER - main assistant and substitute Master

- STEWARDS - brothers responsible for the supply and purchase of Group genres

Many ranches have siblings who also performs other functions, such as:
Spiritual Guide , TREASURER and HELPERS .

and whereevery ranch of Pilgrimsprays.
You can follow the track indicated in this cache, which is the path followed by all Pilgrims Groups who do not go to the parish of the Sete Cidades.
You can also move around in the car, to the access point indicated.
Upon arriving to the oratory, you can enter the pasture where the GZ is located. The entry is authorized by the farmer who uses this pasture
and that was also Pilgrim.
