Geocache Description:

This is the fourth cache on a walk of about 4.5 miles in beautiful Dartmoor countryside. The route is fairly level with only 1 significant down and up between 1 and 8. Nos. 2 and 9 require a bit more agility and to get to 10 you have to cross a stream and the terrain from then on until 12 is rough. From this cache you want to head up towards the pond/old quarry workings and then when you meet the old granite tramway follow it towards Smallacombe Rocks.

This series of caches has been put out in memory of my Dad who sadly passed away suddenly in April. He always said to us 'Going Geo-nutcasing today then?' So I wanted to use this in the cache titles. Having placed a series near Bradworthy in North Devon where I grew up, I wanted to do one where I live now and have also spent a lot of time since he died. He also actually did find a cache with us in this area so thought it appropriate. So I hope you all enjoy going geo-nutcasing and finding this series of caches.

This cache is on the slopes of Holwell Tor. There is lots of evidence of the old granite railway and mining of the past in this area of interest. The actual quarry is located on the north side of Holwell Tor down a steep incline. This was the second largest of the Haytor Quarries and was being worked from around 1820 through to 1840. Just below the quarry rumour has it that Dartmoor piskies have their midnight parties! There is a boggy area nearby so don't get pixie led in to that one!

Please re-hide this cache well. Thank you.

The weather on Dartmoor can change suddenly and unexpectedly and ALL types of weather conditions can be experienced. Please ensure that you have the correct clothing and map and compass (and know how to use them). Please do NOT rely solely on your GPS.

I would like to thank the Dartmoor National Park Authority for their kind permission to place this cache, which has been placed according to their geocaching guidelines.
