This was Hampden Park's first church, and built as a chapel of ease to Willingdon. (Church Micro 4633) It was originally built in 1908 and was originally of red brick and stone. Sadly it was bombed in October 1940, during WWII. Only the bell tower remained.
It was replaced by Edward Maufe's simplified perpendicular Gothic church, built between 1952 and 1954. It became one of the first post war buildings to receive listed status. Rev. Donald Carpenter, the first incumbent at the new church, served for 21 years and is commemorated by a clock on the south face of the tower. Many redecoration and improvements have been done over the last few years, including a new roof in 2007, thanks to a grant from English Heritage.
