Geocache Description:

Mull: Calve Island View
The great protector of Tobermory

Calve Island is an uninhabited island on the east coast of Mull, and serves a useful purpose in providing shelter for Tobermory Bay; it is separated from Mull by a tidal channel. It also separates the attractive inlet of Tobermory Bay from the Sound of Mull.

Little seems to be known about Calve Island. It is uninhabited, except for a summer dwelling, but the island is known to philatelists because in 1984, the Royal Mail issued a postage stamp featuring a Bassett Hound and bearing the legend ‘Calve Island, Tobermory’. Its 17p cost made it legal to carry mail anywhere in Britain, one of a number of idiosyncratic island stamps.

This is a popular island for divers, who seek out the wreck of ‘The Pelican’, a coal-carrying vessel and one of the first steel ships to be built.

There are great views out to Calve Island from the coastal walk between Tobermory and Aros Park, and from the small hill at the northern end of Aros Park. The cache has been placed to encourage walkers to find the way up to this lovely corner of Aros Park and enjoy the view of Calve Island.

The cache is just inside woodland cover, which may affect GPS readings.
