Mull: Dun Haunn, Treshnish
A walk on the wild side
The remains of Dun Haunn are in a strong position on the south-western end of the Treshnish coastal promontory about 200 metres NNE of the headland known as Dun Haunn. There is little to see; all that remains are the wasted remains of a dun and its outworks. The summit of the rocky boss occupied by the main work rises only 5.5m above the level of the promontory on the NE, but it is protected on all other sides by sheer or overhanging precipices 40m high.
The site of the entrance is not certain, but it may be indicated by the slight depression in the wall core on the E, near the head of a natural inclined ramp that gives relatively easy access to the summit from the promontory.
The setting is quite magnificent, at the northern end of a prominent raised beach. The cache, however, is located a short distance away to deter interference with what little remains of the dun.
Do not search in the dun for the cache.
Parking is available on the main coastal road. Do not attempt to drive down to Treshnish Farm; the very narrow, single-track road is used regularly by farm vehicles, and by people staying at cottages beyond the farm. There is no turning area down the road, and no parking facility.
