Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Huskers Power Trail

University of Nebraska Athletics – Early nicknames for the athletic teams at the University of Nebraska included the “Hawkeyes”, the “Antelopes”, the “Old Gold Knights”, the “Bugeaters”, and the “Mankilling Mastodons”. The name Cornhuskers first appeared in the school newspaper as “We Have Met The Cornhuskers And They Are Ours” referring to a 20-18 upset victory over Iowa in 1893.

Football - The football team began competitive play in 1890, as of 2014, they have claimed 46 conference championships and part or all of five national championships: 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, and 1997. The latter three mark one of only two times that a team has won three NCAA Division I-A national football championships in four seasons. Over the past 25 years, the Huskers’ three Division I national championships are the second-most of any Division 1 university.

The Storm - One of the reasons we choose this area was to bring awareness to what a tornado can do to a town. On May 22, 2004, a tornado touched down outside Hallam, Nebraska. It would soon become the world’s largest tornado, reaching its peak at 2.5 miles wide. The tornado destroyed the town of Hallam, tossing a freight train off the tracks west of town. The tornado continued its path of distruction just north of Cortland and 2 miles north of Firth. Norris Schools suffered severe damage, the middle school being the hit the worst. There, the auditorium roof caved in, along with several walls as well. Busses were tossed, and homes northeast of the schools were flattened to rubble.

Huskers Power Trail – The word "GO" is 3 miles wide and two miles high. The word "HUSKERS!" is 15 miles wide, and 2 miles high. There are over 300 caches hidden along the Husker Power Trail. There will be some easy park and grabs, and some tough hides along the way. Due to the available hiding spots, quite a few puzzles had to be used to make the trail work.

For everyones safety, when retrieving these hides please pull your car all the way over. Please do not damage any property or do anything to harm yourself or others.

There are restaurants in Hallam, and Firth (just east of the trail), and gas can be found in Cortland (just south on the east side of the trail on HWY 77).

Cache Information

The cache IS NOT at the listed coordinates. There is nothing at GZ (Ground Zero) that will help with this cache.

Welcome to Huskers - G01; Little Words #1

The grid below contains 10 little words that should be well known to all geocachers. The 10 little words are broken into 2 or more word fragments. The order of the letters was not changed, just broken down into smaller fragments. A total of 35 word fragments are scattered throughout the grid. Your job is to use the clues provided to put the 10 little words back together. Each word fragment is only used one time.

The Puzzle

N 40 ab.cde W 096 fg.hij

Now, to find the numbers. Keep track of the grid location that contains the 2nd word fragment from each of the 10 little words. The left-most column of that row contains a number. Plug that number into the appropriate spot in the coordinates.

For Example:

If the second word fragment for clue A is “che” (upper left box), then plug the number 7 into position A of the coordinates. By the way, that is not the correct answer.

The cache is bigger than a nano and should not be too difficult to find.
