Cill An Ailean
A beautiful resting place
Cill an Ailean means the Chapel of the Beautiful Place. The remains of this ancient chapel and burial ground are located on the slopes of Glen Aros.
A 19th-century drystone wall encloses this remote burial ground, but the remains of the chapel date back to medieval times. The rectangular outline of the chapel is still visible today. Carved sandstone fragments can be dated by their design to the 13th century.
The name Cill an Ailean, suggests even greater age for the chapel grounds. The Gaelic pre-fix "Cill" is old and may date to before the 9th century.
Please respect this ancient setting, and let your visit be peaceful.
The cache is not located within the grounds of the chapel, nor is it in any part of the walls.
