About the church.
This large stone built medieval church is dedicated to St Peter and dates back to medieval times, although the present building dates back to the early 15th century. It is an unusual building as the porch and priest's door is situated in the South wall. The battlemented West tower contains six bells, which date back to 1717. The lychgate at the entrance to the churchyard was erected in 1922 in memory of the parishioners who were killed in the First World War. The lychgate leads into an extensive churchyard, which contains an ancient yew tree.
The first historic reference to the church in Peterston is in the valuation of Norwich of 1254 although the present Norman church is reputed to have been built on the site of an earlier Celtic church, and dates mainly from the early 15th Century. The sturdy tower, its battlemented top supported by stepped corner buttresses, houses a ring of six bells, originally cast in Chepstow in 1717.
The earliest feature of St. Peter’s Church is the 14th century chancel arch but the church is more notable for its Perpendicular style tower. The west tower with its corbelled battlements and gargoyles is 15th century. The chancel was mostly rebuilt in 1890-91 by Kempson & Fowler.
Soap opera fans might be interested to note that Peterston-super-Ely is the primary outdoor filming location for the Welsh-language soap opera, Pobol y Cwm, and the church in the village was used as an indoor and outdoor filming location for the third season of the BBC comedy series Gavin & Stacey for Nessa's wedding to Dave. There was even a poster advertising a Gavin and Stacey bus tour in the porch.
Two notable recent additions to the church are two stained glass windows, one depicting the Good Samaritan and the other a display of foxgloves.
