Geocache Description:

The cache is located close to the old railway line that served Helsby and Alvanley station. The location is a short walk from the parking available in Freshmeadow Lane but please respect the local residents when parking there. You are looking for a small bison tube so please bring a writing stick with you and please replace the cache as found.

Helsby and Alvanley station opened on 22 June 1870 and can still been seen from the railway bridge on Chester Road (A56). It was opened by Cheshire Lines Committee. The station was situated on the Cheshire Lines Committee’s (CLC) Mouldsworth to Helsby Junction railway which opened on the 1 September 1869. The line was primarily constructed for goods services but a passenger station was opened at Helsby on the 22 June 1870. As the BJR already had a station called Helsby the CLC named theirs Helsby and Alvanley. The line was a single track branch so the station was provided with one platform which was located on the east side of the track. It had a two storey brick built building which housed all of the usual station facilities and also had living accommodation for the station master. Unfortunately it closed on the 2 March 1964. The station passed into private ownership after closure and is still in use as a private residence today.
