Esta cache tem como intuito divulgar este produto agrícola de excelência e enaltecer o trabalho realizado pelo agricultor.                       

       Na Madeira ao ouvirmos falar de cebola, lembramo-nos sempre do Caniço. Apesar do evidente crescimento populacional e habitacional verificado nos últimos anos, o Caniço ainda mantém algumas áreas agrícolas bem definidas e preservadas.

         A data de introdução deste bolbo no arquipélago é desconhecida, mas é cultivada há muito tempo, na Madeira e no Porto Santo. O concelho de Santa Cruz é o que concentra grande parte da produção. O ciclo natural começa com a sementeira em canteiros, para se obter as plântulas de cebola ou o 'cebolinho' como é conhecido entre nós. Nas zonas de baixa altitude, a plantação ocorre normalmente em dezembro e a colheita entre abril e maio, sendo essa cebola chamada 'do cedo' ou temporã. Nas zonas de média a alta altitude, a plantação efetua-se  de uma forma geral entre fevereiro e março e a apanha entre junho e julho, sendo essa cebola denominada 'do tarde' ou serôdia. 

            Atualmente, a cebola é comercializada avulso ou em sacos de manga-rede, mas na nossa terra é frequente comprar os tradicionais 'cabos' de cebola, que são as folhas secas entrançadas com os bolbos. As variedades regionais mais importantes são a 'Cebola Vermelha da Camacha', a 'Cebola Branca do Caniço', a 'Pião' e a 'Bujanico'. A 'Garrafal' e a 'Valenciana' foram introduzidas na Região na década de 30 do século passado.

In Madeira when we speak about the onion, we always remember the village of Caniço. Despite the evident growth of population and housing in recent years, the village of Caniço still maintains some well defined and preserved agricultural areas.

The date of introduction of this bulb in the archipelago is unknown, but it has been cultivated in Madeira and Porto Santo for a long time. Production of the onion is mostly concentrated in the county of Santa Cruz. The natural cycle starts with the planting of seeds in beds, to obtain the onion seedlings or 'chives' as it is known to us. In lowland areas, planting typically occurs in December and the harvesting in April and May, and this onion is called 'the early' or temple. In areas of medium to high altitude, planting generally occurs between February and March and harvesting in June and July, and this onion is called 'the late' or latter.

Currently, the onion is sold loose or in mesh bags, but in our village it is common to purchase the traditional 'cable' of onions, which are the dried leaves plaited with bulbs. The most important regional varieties are the 'Camachan Red Onion ', the 'Caniço White Onion ', the 'Mixer' and 'Bujanico'. The 'Garrafal' and 'Valencia' were introduced to the region in the 30s of last century.

The cache is not in the walls and therefore it is not necessary to disassemble them, nor is it in hazardous or inaccessible areas. To harvest the onions you do not have to dig them up, but rather pull and gather them.
