Com nasceste na Serra do Malhão (Caldeirão), a pouco mais de 550 metros de altitude, este rio com 77 km de extensão, delimita a fronteira administrativa entre o Alentejo e o Algarve. Segue uma orientação de O-E, indo desaguar alguns quilómetros a norte de Alcoutim, no Rio Guadiana, a 10 metros de altitude.
Constitui o maior rio sem ingterrupções artificiais, tais como barragens, em Portugal.
Suporta altas concentrações de espécies ameaçadas de peixes de água doce, tais como o Saramugo (Anaecypris hispanica), Enguia-europeia (Anguilla anguilla) e Lampreia (Petromyzon marinus). Foi recentemente classificado como Sítio Ramsar (Zona Húmida de Importância Internacional).
A ponte da Estrada Nacional 2 sobre o Vascão foi concluída em 1913.
A N2 é o primeiro grande eixo rodoviário a ligar verdadeiramente Trás-os-Montes ao Algarve com 737 km de norte a sul, ligando Chaves a Faro
Também aqui o rio delimita fronteira entre o Alentejo e o Algarve.

With its source in the Malhão (Caldeirão) sierra, at a little more than 550 metres of altitude, this river with 77 km of extension, delimits the admisintrative border between the Alentejo and the Algarve. It follows an orientation of O-E, debouching some kilometres north of Alcoutim, in the Guadiana River, at 10 metres of altitude.
It constitutes the biggest river without artificial interruptions such as dams, in Portugal.
It supports high concentrartions of endangered species of fresh-water fishes, such as the Saramugo (Anaecypris hispanica), Enguia-europeia (Anguilla anguilla) and Lampreia (Petromyzon marinus). It has recently been classified as a Ramsar site (Humid Zone of Internacional Importance).
The Nacional 2 road bridge over the Vascão river was concluded in 1913.
The N2 is the fiirst great road axe to thruly connect Trás-os-Montes to the Algarve with 737 km from north to south, linking Chaves to Faro.
Here too, the river delimits the border between the Alentejo and the Algarve.
