Geocache Description:

This geocache is part of the Bernwood Forest Geocaches. The Forest is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and all caches in the series have been given special permission for their placement by the Forestry Commission. All the caches have been designed for children and those new to geocaching. Boxes vary in size from small clip-lock type food containers up to ammo cans. The parking for the forest is at N 51° 48.048 W 001° 06.922

Despite their name and appearance, slow-worms are neither worms nor snakes, but are in fact lizards - they're given away by their ability to shed their tails and blink with their eyelids. They can be found in heathland, tussocky grassland, woodland edges and rides: anywhere they can find invertebrates to eat and a sunny patch in which to sunbathe. They are often found in mature gardens and allotments, where they like hunting around the compost heap. However, if you have a cat, you are unlikely to find them in your garden as cats predate them. Like other reptiles, slow-worms hibernate, usually from October to March.

Much smaller than snakes, with smooth, golden-grey skin. Males are paler and sometimes have blue spots, while females are larger with dark sides and a dark stripe down the back.

This cache is a clip lock box in a camouflage bag. There is a certificate for the First To Find. Please feel free to swap any item in the ‘cache but please remember, if you take something, leave something of equal or greater value in return.
Renumbered from 10 to 5 to create a more logical series around the forest.

First To Find honours go to: mackiespal

N.B. All the caches in this series have been granted permission to be placed by Joanne Mason, the Beat Manager for the forest, and written permission has been passed to the Reviewers. The Forestry Commission will not give permission for any more caches in these woods. Please do not ask the Reviewers to place any further caches as the FC will not allow it and placement of further caches will result in geocaching being banned in this area.
