A Reserva Natural das Ilhas Desertas tem uma área total de 12586 hectares, é delimitada pela batimétrica dos 100 metros e inclui todas as ilhas e ilhéus. Através do estatuto de proteção total são resguardados os ecossistemas de toda a área terrestre (Ilhéu Chão, Deserta Grande, Bugio e ilhéus adjacentes) e toda a área marinha adjacente, localizada a sul da Ponta da Doca a Oeste e da Ponta da Fajã Grande a este. Toda a área marinha adjacente, a norte dos locais anteriormente mencionados integra uma área de proteção parcial.
As Ilhas Desertas compreendem três ilhas: Ilhéu Chão, Deserta Grande e Bugio.
O Ilhéu Chão é a mais pequena das três ilhas. Apresenta a forma de planalto com uma altitude quase constante de 80 metros, atingindo uma máxima de 98 metros no extremo norte, onde existe um Farol. A norte, encontra-se um ilhéu com 50 metros de altitude, denominado de Farilhão. Tem aproximadamente 1600 metros de comprimento e 500 metros de largura.
A Deserta Grande apresenta uma forma alongada, e é a maior e mais alta das três ilhas. Desenvolve-se numa extensão de 11700 metros desde a Ponta da Castanheira a norte, até à Ponta do Tabaqueiro, a sul, com uma largura máxima de 1900 metros. Atinge uma altitude máxima de 479 metros. Ao longo da costa encontram-se inúmeras grutas escavadas na rocha, praias de pequenas dimensões e algumas fajãs. As fajãs de maiores dimensões são a Fajã Grande e a Fajã da Doca que resultaram de desabamentos simultâneos de terras, a oeste e a este, ocorridos em 1894.
O Bugio é comprido e estreito e apresenta a forma de um arco. É a mais acidentada e recortada das ilhas. Estende-se ao longo de 7500 metros de comprimento desde a Ponta do Cágado, a Norte, à Ponta da Agulha, a Sul, e atinge a largura máxima de 700 metros. A altitude máxima é de 388 metros.

The islet Ground is the smallest of the three islands .
