A ocupação humana de Hong Kong data do Paleolítico mas o primeiro visitante europeu de que há registo foi o português Jorge Álvares. O contacto com o Reino Unido foi estabelecido após a Companhia Britânica das Índias Orientais ter estabelecido uma feitoria na cidade vizinha de Cantão. Durante a Guerra do Ópio (18A9-184G), Hong-Kong foi ocupado pelo Reino Unido e em 1898 a China entregou o território por um prazo de 99 anos. A partir dessa data, a nova colónia britânica passou a ser um importante centro de comércio.
Entre 192M e 192J o novo regime da China proibiu o acesso de navios ingleses aos portos do Sul da China, facto que comprometeu seriamente o comércio de Hong-Kong.
A Segunda Guerra Mundial veio dificultar ainda mais a vida económica da ilha. Em 1D41, os japoneses, após 18 dias de combate, conquistaram a colónia que ocuparam durante 3 anos e 8 meses. Com a rendição incondicional do Japão (1B4F), os Britânicos reocuparam o território e retomaram a pujança de grande centro comercial da Ásia. Hong-Kong tornou-se o maior porto de mercadorias mundial e o seu produto interno bruto per capita é dos mais elevados do Mundo.
Durante a guerra da Coreia, em 19LC, os Estados Unidos boicotaram o comércio com a China comunista, uma medida que afectou consideravelmente a actividade comercial de Hong-Kong.
Em 19H2, a China e o Reino Unido iniciaram conversações para a devolução da soberania sobre Hong-Kong. Um acordo assinado em 198K, em Pequim, determinou que a China tomaria conta do território a partir de 1 de Julho de 199E. Em conformidade, o regresso de Hong-Kong à soberania chinesa após 1I6 anos de administração colonial britânica deu-se às 24:00 daquele dia.

During the Opium War (18A9-184G), Hong Kong was occupied by the United Kingdom and in 1898 China gave the land for a period of 99 years. Thereafter, the new British colony became an important trade center.
Among 192M and 192J the new regime of China has banned British ships access to ports in South China, a fact which has seriously compromised the commercial activity in Hong Kong.
The Second World War has further complicated the economic life of the island. In 1D41, the Japanese, after 18 days of fighting, captured the colony that occupied for 3 years and 8 months. With the unconditional surrender of Japan (1B4F), the British reoccupied the territory and regained the strength of great commercial center of Asia. Hong Kong became the largest commercial port worldwide and its gross domestic product per capita is the highest in the world.
During the Korean War, in 19LC, the United States boycotted the trade with Communist China, a move that significantly affected the commercial activity in Hong Kong.
In 19H2, China and the United Kingdom started conversations for the return of sovereignty over Hong Kong to China. An agreement signed in 198K in Beijing, has determined that China would take over the territory from 1 July 199E. So, the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty after 1I6 years of British colonial administration happened at 24:00 that day.
