Waterloo Necropolis Station
You are looking for a black dust cap cache.
The cache is situated on the front of the disused London Necropolis railway station, the facade of the office being still intact.
Please use great stealth when retrieving cache.
Ensure cache is well hidden and secured afterwards.

Location information

This cache is a direct replacement for the original cache by FantasticCat which fell into disrepair and was lost in an archive, attempts to resurrect the original listing failed, so please excuse if you think you are having a Déjà vu moment!

Opened in 1854, the Necropolis Railway had a mortuary station in south London where grieving families brought their loved ones. Coffins and mourners were then loaded on to the Black Cat train and taken to Brookwood Cemetery, 25 miles away in the countryside. The coffins and mourning passengers travelled in first, second and third class coaches.

The station was originally located between York Street (now Leake Street) and Westminster Bridge Road – directly to platforms within the cemetery. The station was rebuilt in this location at 121 Westminster Bridge Road in 1902 when the mainline station was reconstructed. Prior to 1900 funeral trains usually ran once each day but after this only operated "as required" until by the mid-1930s they only ran twice each week; much of their traffic having moved to the road network. There were two stations at the destination, Brookwood Cemetary, one for Anglicans and one for Non-Conformists.

On the night of 16 April 1941 the station was hit by bombs and never rebuilt or re-opened.
