Geocache Description:

REALLY SideTracked - Widmerpool is a fairly short multi cache starting from the former Widmerpool Railway Station, now part of the Old Dalby Test Track, using wireless "chirp" beacons.

To be able to complete this cache you should have a device capable of receiving the Garmin Chirp Wireless Beacon protocol, with it's chirp detection enabled.

The above co-ordinates should take you to a railway bridge over the Old Dalby Test Track. Stand looking at the former Widmerpool station, and you should receive information for the next leg of your search. You will find space to park at the side of the road in the pull-in to the pub which the station has now become. The pub is now open again and offers a nice carvery. Please note the cache is nothing to do with the pub, and the car park is intended for customers use, if you choose to park here it may be polite to have a drink.

You are not able to take a car to further legs of the cache, but it is accessible for bikes and horses, and should be fine for push chairs and wheelchairs, although a wheel chair user would need help retrieving the final cache. You may need to cross busy roads so please take care, particularly if you are with younger cachers!

The cache will fit small Geocoins and Trackables, and contains various swap items as well as the log.

You regularly see London Underground tube trains undergoing testing in this area, a strange sight in the middle of a Nottinghamshire field!

As people have had issues picking up the beacons on occasions I have put a laminated copy of the next stages coordinates tucked in behind each chirp. If you can't get the chirp information please let me know so I can check it!

Widmerpool Station

Widmerpool station was opened for goods on 1st Nov 1879 and for passengers on 2nd Feb 1880 by the Midland Railway on its cut-off line from Melton Mowbray to Nottingham, which had opened the previous year to allow the railway company's expresses between London and the North to avoid reversal at Nottingham. It also improved access to and from the iron-ore fields in Leicestershire and Rutland.

Local passenger traffic was always minimal, a situation not helped by the station being situated one and a half miles from the village of its name, and it closed to passengers as early as February 1949.

According to the Official Handbook of Stations the following classes of traffic were being handled at this station in 1956: G, P†, F, L, H, C and there was a 1 ton 10 cwt crane!

The station closed to goods in 1965.

Following the closure of the line as a through-route in 1968, the track between Melton Mowbray and Edwalton was reused as part of the Old Dalby Test Track. This was used initially for the Advanced Passenger Train project and, more recently, Class 390 Pendolino units. It is currently used for testing London Underground trains and Class 172 units.

The station's Up platform remains in existence, as does the Down platform waiting room although the platform itself was removed during electrification work in 2000 and is thought to be the only remaining untouched Midland Railway building on the line. The main station building was converted into a pub and restaurant c1966 before the line closed, and was originally called the Schooner Inn! The pub is currently closed, but adverts for staff suggest it may re-open.  The lines 115¼ Milepost has been preserved in its original position and was now next to the bar.

The timber goods shed survived until electrification in 2000. Just to the north of the station site lies Stanton Tunnel, 1,330 yards (1,220 m) long.
