The forest is a remnant of the medieval royal hunting forest. Reminders of the past can still be found, with many miles of ancient woodbanks, building remains and ancient trees. The 'druids' or veteran oaks in Salcey are rare and amazing wildlife habitats, and some of the old oaks are believed to be over 500 years old.

At GZ you will find one of those Ancient old Druids "Church Path Oak" which is one of Salcey's famous "druid" oaks, and was thought to be 400 years old when it finally fell, which was in 1995. A Druid Oak is a large oak tree found in many ancient forests in Britain. Many such forests have named Druid Oaks - one such example being the Church Path Oak. There are also other rare examples in Salcey Forest. Typically such trees will be hundreds of years old. The name relates to the ancient Druids who met in forests' Oak groves and in particular beneath the old Oak trees. It is interesting to note that one etymology of the word Druid comes from "dru-wid", which means "knower of oak trees". After thinking about the delights and horrors this old Oak will have been witness to, collect the following info from the immediate area around the published coords.
