Church Micro 4274...Caldecote-St Theobold&St Chad Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

simplysup: I hate having to archive a Church Micro, but having found out at first hand how zealously the residents guard their private space I think it's the right thing to do. Whilst access (on foot) to the Church is accepted, stepping onto the grass anywhere on the estate is liable to lead to you being challenged as a trespasser.

Geocache Description:

The late 13th Century Church of St Theobold and St Chad, a Grade II listed building.
Approach - on foot - via the Caldecote Hall drive only, there is no footpath through the field to the Church (despite what the map might show).
The cache is a keysafe rock.

The Church is situated in the private grounds of Caldecote Hall. The Hall was once owned by the Purefoy family, who were Parliamentarians. Besieged in 1642 by Royalists, it was burnt to the ground. The only remaining part, an Oak door - still with bullet holes - now hangs on the porch of the Church.
Access on foot (to the Church only, not the Hall, which is now spilt into private residence flats) is permitted, but there is no vehicular access allowed.

The Church remains active, with services every other Sunday and on major feast days. Sadly it isn't open for visitors to look round.

Given the location, access during the hours of darkness is discouraged.
