Geocache Description:

St. Matthew’s Church

St. Matthew’s Church is situated at the top of the hill in High Brooms. (so named after the ‘broom’ which once grew in part of the locality).
It is built from the classic High Brooms Red brick (manufactured from the red clay underlying this area) which is also apparent in the surrounding housing and pavements.
In the late nineteenth Century, The High Brooms Brick Company” was set up by Methodist builder and developer, Mr Weare. and not only supplied all the brick for the houses in the area, but also made bricks transported by train to London from around the turn of the century when High Brooms station was built.
St. Matthew’s church was built in 1902 succeeding the mission church of 1886; The parish was created in 1899 from Southborough St Peter & Tunbridge Wells St John. The church was built as a Methodist Church alongside schools, women’s groups and the High Brooms Working Men’s Club - which was in place by 1900.
High Brooms was designed as a Christian community even before there were houses. The church served the working class area, of builders, colliers and men who worked in the High Brooms brick factory, which stood between the Station and current North Farm Retail Park.
