In ancient times nature objects had a special cult meaning/ In the territory of Latvia the cult of holy woods was widely known, as well as sacralisation of separate trees. Trees were perceived as shrines due to the belief that nature spirits and fertility deities dwelled there. Especially great, thick, gorgeous trees were noteworthy, thus visited for cult purposes with offerings.

According to tales in ancient times our ancestors used to bring offerings under the Linden for the souls of the dead ones (in Latvian called “veļi”). Veļi are souls of the dead people that continue their lives in the kingdom to come after the death. That kingdom exists in parallel with the kingdom of the humans – lives of the dead souls do not differ significantly from those of the humans, at least in terms of work. In the kingdom of the dead one continues the things started in this world. In different counties beliefs point at the period of time from the middle of September till Mārtiņi (Martins’ Day) as the time of veļi - dievaines. The time in autumn when the ground is often covered with fog and it is drizzling is the right time for the dead souls to visit the humans.
