Bedrīšakmeņi izplatība pasaulē ir ļoti plaša - šādi cilvēku pārveidoti akmeņi ir atklāti Skandināvijā, Britu salās, Ziemeļvācijā, Vidusjūras piekrastes zemēs, Kaukāzā un Altajā. Līdzīgi bedrīšakmeņi ir atrasti arī Indijā, Sibīrijā, Ķīnā, Austrālijā un Amerikā. Tomēr visplašākā izplatība šāda tipa cilvēku pārveidotiem akmeņiem ir tieši Ziemeļeiropā.
Par bedrīšakmeņu izveides iemesliem vēsturnieki ir izvirzījuši vairāk nekā 30 dažādas versijas, bet kura no tām īstā, ir vēl zinātnei noskaidrojams jautājums nākotnē. Viens no populārākajiem skaidrojumiem tam, kāpēc tika veidotas bedrītes, ir - ziedojumu ievietošanai. Tomēr Ventkalnu bedrīšakmens bedrīšu izmēri skaidri parāda, ka tajās būtu ļoti grūti likt kādus ziedojumus (bedrītes ir izmēros seklas un grūti pamanāmas). To izmēri liek domāt par citām bedrīšu izcelsmes versijām - iespējams tās senāk ieveidotas kādos kulta rituālos, kas veikti, atzīmējot cilvēku dzīves gaitas — piedzimšanu vai nomiršanu. Vēl ir versija, ka bedrītes ir saistītas ar maģiskiem auglības rituāliem.

The Cup-Marked Stone is attributed to the Bronze Age (1500-1st century BC) or Early and Middle Iron Age (beginning of our age – the year 800) and the carvings of cup-marked stones is related to the Finno-Ugric culture.
Cup-marked stones are widespread in the world – such stones have been discovered in Scandinavia, British Islands, Northern Germany, Mediterranean countries, in the Caucasus, and Altai. Similar cup-marked stones have been discovered in India, Siberia, China, Australia, and America. Still the widest prevalence of such type of stones hewn by humans is in Northern Europe.
Historians have proposed more than 30 different hypotheses about formation of cup-marked stones, still science will have to establish in future which of them is the right one. One of the most popular explanations why cup marks were made is that for placing offerings. Though the size of the Ventkalni Cup-Marked Stone’s cup marks clearly points at the fact that it would be quite difficult to place offerings into them (the cup marks are small in size and shallow, and scarcely noticeable). Their size makes us think about other versions of origin of the cup marks – it is possible that they were formed during some cult rituals that were held to commemorate a human being’s life circle — birth and death. One more credible version is that cup marks are related to magical fertility rituals.
