Durtal - Le bout du monde !
L’origine du quartier
Au XIème siècle, le seigneur de Durtal, Hubert III, souhaite étendre le bourg au delà du Loir, sur la rive gauche, et fait appel aux moines de St Serges d'Angers pour édifier un pont, une église, une chapelle, des bâtiments monastiques et un four.
L’histoire de la chapelle
La Chapelle Saint Léonard (au bout de la rue, à droite), bâtie en pierres brutes du pays, présente des vestiges de peintures murales du XVIIème siècle. Elle fut consacrée en 1096 et les moines de Saint Serge furent propriétaires jusqu'au 17ème siècle.
Plus récemment, cette chapelle devait être condamnée afin de construire un garage ! C'est un peu par hasard qu’en 1993, lors d'un achat de vieilles pierres, un durtalois proposa de l'acquérir pour la sauver... Grâce à une association, des travaux ont permis de la remettre en partie en état.
Le bout du Monde
Même si la Terre n'est pas plate, le bout du Monde a bel et bien existé à partir de 1740, lorsque le pont de bois reliant les deux rives fut détruit. Les habitants appelèrent donc le bout de la rue le bout du Monde !

Durtal – The end of the World !
The origin of the neighborhood
In the eleventh century, the Lord of Durtal, Hubert III, wanted to extend the village over the Loir river. He asked the monks of St Sergius - in Angers - to build a bridge, a church, a chapel, some monastic buildings and an oven.
The history of the chapel
Saint Leonard chapel (on the right at the end of the street), was built with local rough stones. Inside : seventeenth century wall paintings. It was consecrated in 1096 and the monks of St. Sergius were owners until the 17th century.
Recently, the chapel should be condemned to become a garage ! It is by chance in 1993, during old stones purchasing, a durtalois - man who lives in Durtal - proposed to buy the chapel in order to save it ... Thanks to an association, some works have been done to partly restore it.
The end of the World
Even if the Earth is not flat, the end of the World has indeed existed from 1740, when the wooden bridge - connecting the two banks - was destroyed. The people then called the end of the road the end of the World ! (in French “le bout du Monde”).
