St Mary’s Church
The church has been the central focus for the village for many centuries, located centrally and circumnavigated by a single lane road. A church has stood on this spot since prior to 1254, but was almost entirely rebuilt in 1862.
The fact that the Church is dedicated to Mary confirms that the Church was built by the Normans following their successful conquest of large parts of South Wales in the 11th and 12th centuries.
The Church’s medieval origin is evidenced by the Norman door and font and the fact that in the churchyard there is a Calvary of three steps surmounted by the socket stone of a Medieval Latin cross. The church has an unusual chancel because it weeps to the south, whereas normally weeping chancels angle towards the north.
It is commonly supposed that medieval churches were invariably aligned towards the East. In fact they were aligned to the rising sun as it appeared on a particular day, in a tradition adapted from prehistoric sun-worship to Christian observance of the daily rising sun as the eternal symbol of the Christ rising from the darkness of the tomb.
“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list”
