Geocache Description:

Llanwarne has two churches, the ruined Church of St. John, the Baptist and Christ Church, which is situated on higher ground slightly to the west of the original site.

Llanwarne

Llanwarne means The church by the swamp/marsh or alders, according to the Oxford Dictionary of English Place-Names and this is supported by it having the ruined Church of St. John, the Baptist which was abandoned in 1864 due to constant flooding from the brook, the Gamber, and this was replaced by Christ Church. Both churches are worth a visit.

Church of St. John, the Baptist

The chancel and nave of St. John's were built in the 13th Century, with later alterations, which include rebuilding of the south aisle and a cross being built in the churchyard during the 14th century. A tower and columbarium and a lych gate were added during the 15th century and in the 16th century, an Elizabethan monument was placed on the south wall. The porch and doorway were built in the 17th century.

Above the entrance is a sundial that was reinstated on the 28th August 2012 by the friends and family of Ian Birchley. The oak frame was a requirement of English Heritage and has faded to silver grey and so now blends in.

The bells in the Old Church are still rung on special occasions for services and ceremonies in the New Church. A fox used to live on the first floor of the bell tower and it was unclear how it stood the noise.

Do not climb on the stonework as although the village as chosen to preserve the Old Church, its walls are not safe.

Christ Church

Christ Church is quite a large and interesting structure where the entrance porch has a short spire. The Baskerville Mynors were responsible for the building of a new church.

This New Church also houses a mediaeval bell that hung in the old church until 1939 and boasts 27 figurative stained glass roundals that date from the 16th Century. They originate from the Netherlands and each was made from a single piece of white glass decorated with glass paint and yellow stain.

The Cache

The cache is a well camoed container that holds geo-tat and can also hold trackables too.
