Back in 2008 the station was in a poor state of disrepair, with graffiti covering the walls and a lack of seating. The community based project to revamp the station began that year when the Dalton Development Partnership granted £20,000 as part of the gateways scheme in Dalton.
Further consultation, support, and in some cases financial aid, was received from: Dalton Council, Awards for All lottery, BAE, Northern Rail, Network Rail, National Probation Service, The Police and local people
Mosaic artist Janette Ireland worked with the primary school children in Dalton to produce mosaic panels which were placed along the fence. South Lakes Wild Animal Park worked with Chapel Street Infant School to produce some artwork for the station. Another group of school children from George Romney Primary School produced some George Romney replica paintings for the concrete waiting areas on the station.
Part of the project was an archway for the entrance to the station and a group of Dowdales School children designed it with the start-up help of the local history society. Local metalwork artist Chris Brammall created the archway
