This wonderful small temple is located at the corner of old-fashioned Povarskaya St. with its luxury mansions and the wide New Arbat St. with its tower buildings and huge traffic at any time of the day.
When I was a boy I frequently visited the place (we lived nearby). Actually, I was very much surpised to see sharp contrast between the unusual small cozy church with its VERY thick walls and the surroundings of New Arbat (at that time - Kalinin avenue): multy-store towers built with concrete, steel and glass; shops; traffic; people always hurrying into nowhere. Only years after I knew that the XVII century temple was condemned to demolition by communists when the local powers decided to build the new avenue through this old Moscow district. Many old houses were demolished and the lane where I was born (Trubnikovsky) was cut into two parts so you cannot just walk it from the beginning to the end easily. The Simeon Stolpnik temple happened to be at the closest point of New Arbat to the Kremlin so - initially - they wanted to blow it up to avoid the "damned heritage of the past" spoil wonderful landscapes of Soviet reality. Muscovites strongly resisted this intention and managed to save the temple. Or, to tell truth, the remains of the walls and the roof. The building was in very bad condition, almost ruined after decades of the communist dictatorship so in 1966-68 the government had to restore it. There's a legend that restorators even erected nice crosses at the building but the government immediately ordered to cut them off. The temple was turned into museum of small animals, birds and exotic fish. From time to time they organized exhibitions there (I remember one related to nice little things made of amber). It was an unusual museum: the premises were so small and passages so narrow that it was difficult to get there at weekends and there was sometimes a queque near the entrance of people waiting for their turn to squeeze into the museum.
Only in 1992 the temple was passed to the Russian Orthodox Church.
Let me tell you a few words about the surroundings now. Right behind the church there's a huge tower of New Arbat (1967) which Muscovites believe to be one of the ugliest buildings in the heart of the city. (Well, if you walk a little bit further along Povarskaya St. you'll see even the uglier tower erected for the Supreme Court of Russia which reminds me the Saruman's tower from Lord of the Rings). At the back there's a former mansion that belongs to the Embassy of Norway. Across Povarskaya St. there's a green park and a school. Closer to the New Arbat there are building no. 8 and 10, formerly living houses, now occupied mostly by different offices. You may ask why the numbers start from 8 and not from 2 (as normally); that's because long ago Povarskaya St. had its beginning at the old Arbatskaya Square. After the powers started the construction of New Arbat some buildings were demolished just to free space necessary for the new avenue.

Этот замечательный маленький храм находится на углу несколько старомодной Поварской улицы с ее роскошными особняками и широким Новым Арбатом с его башнями, машинами и шумом в любое время суток.
Когда я был мальчиком, то часто приходил сюда (мы жили неподалеку). И в самом деле, удивительный, острый контраст небольшой уютной церкви с ОЧЕНЬ толстыми стенами - и новоарбатским окружением (в то время Новый Арбат назывался проспектом Калинина). Башни из бетона, стали и стекла; магазины; люди, спешащие туда-сюда. Лишь годы спустя я узнал, что храм XVII века был фактически приговорен к разрушению. Местные власти собирались проложить через старинный московский район новый проспект. Многие старые дома были снесены, а улицы изменены. Например, переулок, в котором я родился (Трубниковский), оказался перерезан на две части, теперь вдоль него от начала до конца просто так не пройдешь. Церковь Симеона Столпника была вблизи самого начала Калининского проспекта (со стороны Кремля), портила прекрасные ландшафты социалистических достижений, и правительство уже готовилось ее уничтожить. Москвичи решительно выступили против и сумели защитить храм. Вернее, уже только останки стен и крыши. Здание было в катастрофическом состоянии, почти разрушено за десятилетия диктатуры коммунистов. В 1966-68 правительство восстановило храм. Существует легенда, что реставраторы даже сделали и установили кресты на церкви, но как только власти увидели это, то немедленно распорядились срезать их автогеном. Церковь превратили в музей: там показывали мелкие породы животных, птиц и экзотических рыбок. Потом в храме проводили выставки (я помню одну - изделия из янтаря). Это был необычный музей. Комнатки внутри были маленькие, а коридорчики такие узкие, что по выходным можно было видеть очередь у входа снаружи: посетители ждали своей очереди, чтобы протиснуться внутрь.
Только в 1992 году храм передали Русской Православной церкви.
Позвольте еще несколько слов об окрестностях. Сразу за церковью высится одна из арбатских башен (1967), которую москвичи считают принадлежащей к одной из наиболее уродливых серий в центре столицы. Впрочем, если вы прогуляетесь вдоль Поварской, то увидите еще более уродливое здание - новую башню Верховного Суда РФ, которая напоминает мне башню Сарумана из "Властелина колец". По соседству расположен особняк, в котором размещается посольство Норвегии. Напротив, через Поварскую улицу, можно видеть небольшой парк и школу. Ближе к Новому Арбату - здания под номерами 8 и 10, бывшие доходные дома. Можете спросить, почему отсчет начинается с 8, а не 2, как обычно; потому, что Поварская улица начиналась от старой Арбатской площади, и при перепланировке улиц в связи со строительством Нового Арбата первые дома по Поварской улице снесли.
