Geocache Description:

Sports field cache overlooking playing fields and Banyule Flats wetlands.

With an expansive view comes an exposed GZ.

Like many weekend family taxi services, over the years we have frequented a plethora of sports ground over the seasons, but Banyule Flats has a fairly unique feature.

While I'm sure Coober Pedy SA can boast something similar, perhaps this is the only one in Metropolitan Melbourne, even Victoria maybe where the Clubrooms and facilities are subterranean.

From your vantage point you can survey your surrounding landscape as it stretches before you, providing plenty of advanced notice of approaching muggles, and even on busy sport days a discrete retrieval is possible if the "balcony" isn't too heavily patronized.

There are some other local caches worth visiting while in the area, but if you are pressed for time, the 'must see' is a short hike uphill to "View from the bank" GC35B3G where there is historical local significance.

As an interesting aside, if you noticed the light structures are a bit strange- there is a story to them.

As a region of significance, these Swamp and Wetlands needed a lighting solution that would not adversely affect the migratory and nocturnal behaviors of the endangered species habituating the area.

Atop the 27m poles are glare shields believed to be the only of its type in Victoria, and can withstand winds rated at A2! who knew?
