This station still serves the travellers on the Windermere branch line which runs from Oxenholme on the West Coast Main Line to the tourist hotspot of Windermere. When built, the village at the terminus was known as Birthwaite Fold and the village only became Windermere because, amongst others, a notable local poet fought to keep the railway from coming down to the lakeside or desecrating any deeper into our wonderful Lake District. The terminus station was named Windermere despite the sizeable gap in distance and height between the it and the lake of the same name! Although Burneside station has been cut down to one platform, there are now direct trains from here each day to Manchester and its airport.
