Geocache Description:

A visit to St Mary the Virgin in the heart of Aylesbury Old Town.

Evidence suggests that there has been a church here since Saxon times, although the current building dates from the first half of the 13th century, with further extensions during the 14th century.  In the crypt there is an arch which is believed to be Saxon, while the font is Norman in origin and predates the building.  There are other features which date from the perpendicular (15th century).  The church building was restored during 1849-55 afte the building was found to be unsafe.  This restoration completely changed many areas of the building.  The pews were removed during a further, smaller restoration. The bell tower houses 8 bells, one from 1612, and the others from 1773.

The building itself consists on several different areas, all of which have interesting points of note. It is well worth a visit inside, however it is possible to visit from the comfort of your armchair via google.  The church is a thriving part of Aylesbury and participates in many events during the town's calendar.

First visit Zacharias Daniel Hunt at the above coordinates, who died on Ath December BCDE, age FF.  Be careful, you need Mr Hunt senior!

The cache is at N51  F (B+C) . E (A-B) (C-B)   W000 F C. (A+F) A (A+B+D)

Congratulations to HHHP20 for FTF

Please replace the cache as well hidden, if not better, as the churchyard can be very busy.  The parking wardens are vigilant and I recommend parking in one of the nearby carparks.

This cache is placed with the kind permission of St Mary’s District Church Council

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.

There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list
