An ongoing and costly graffiti problem at Watsonia Library has been rectified by a talented group of street artists who have created a library themed graffiti masterpiece on the library's back wall. Artists who are part of Banyule City Council's legal street art program created the artwork, which features Wii characters and flying books. Banyule City Youth Worker, Lisa Said says five young people worked on the mural, including two who had been referred to the street art program, Freestyle, through Back-Up, a program which gives young people who have been at a police station an opportunity to be referred to support services instead of being charged. Watsonia Library branch manager Barb Armstrong came up with the idea. "We were continually asking council to remove ugly graffiti from the outside walls, so we talked to the council about different alternatives. We're really happy with the final result."
