On the 28th March 1910, at the Heathcote Easter camp for military training exercises, Lieutenant George A Taylor, an officer in the Intelligence Corps of the Militia, along with three civilian experts, transmitted the very first military wireless signal in Australia.
The signal was in the form of Morse Code and was successfully received two miles to the south in a cave on a landmark known as Spion Kop in what is now Heathcote National Park.
This was pioneering work of the day and showed that such signals could be transmitted under less than favourable conditions and over rugged terrain, ultimately proving to be of great assistance during the Great War of 1914 - 1918.
The two sites that were established to conduct these tests were known as "Station A" and "Station B". Station A was in a tent next to the gatekeepers cottage at Heathcote Station, and Station B was two miles to the south in the cave on Spion Kop.

The nearest parking is by the Mirang Fire Trail gate along the Princes Highway, which can be accessed from both the northbound and southbound directions. From here it is about 800m walk along formed tracks (it can get muddy after rain) to GZ. Otherwise, there are plenty of places where you can pick up the fire trail that runs parallel to the highway to the west of Heathcote. Be aware that the tracks can be very popular for mountain bikers, especially on the weekend.
The final location will take you very close to Station B. However, due to NP regulations, the cache could not be placed there. From GZ it is only a very short detour to visit the cave where the signal was received. The co-ordinates for Station B are S 34 06.213 E 150 59.288.
