[SV] Lemströms kanal byggdes för hand 1882 då Åland var en del av det ryska riket. Kanalen är 350 meter lång och förbinder Slemmern och Lumparn. Ryssarna byggde kanalen eftersom de var besvikna att sjöfartsstaden Mariehamn, grundad 1861, idkade mer handel västerut till Sverige än österut inom det ryska riket. Kanalen skulle underlätta och stimulera handeln österut.
Numera har kanalen ingen kommersiell betydelse, men på sommaren är den uppskattad bland fritidsbåtar. Bron öppnas sommartid under vissa fasta tider, se http://www.regeringen.ax/lemstrom/ för information om broöppning.
[EN] Lemström's canal was built by hand 1882 when Åland was part of the Russian empire. The canal is 350 meters long and connects Slemmernd and Lumparn. The Russians built the canal because they were dissappointed that the maritime town of Mariehamn, founded 1861, traded more westward to Sweden than eastward within the Russian empire. The canal was supposed to facilitate and stimulate the trade eastwards.
These days the canal has no commercial significance, but during the summer it is appreciated by the smaller leisure boats. The bridge opens at certain fixed times during the summer days, see http://www.regeringen.ax/lemstrom/ for more information of the bridge opening schedule.
