É isso que aconteceu nos Açores no que respeita às baleias e à sua caça. Esta atividade constitui parte do ADN dos habitantes destas ilhas, assumindo-se como um legado histórico de extrema relevância na Identidade Açoriana.
Neste âmbito, a qualificação urbana do Miradouro da Vigia da Furada concilia a recuperação de uma vigia antiga que, no período da caça à baleia, funcionou junto ao Farol de Ponta Garça, sendo neste momento uma infraestrutura dedicada à atividade do whale watching e utilizada complementarmente para fins de educação e sensibilização ambiental e cultural, junto da comunidade local e dos turistas. Pretende-se, deste modo, divulgar a incrível diversidade da fauna marinha selvagem dos Açores.
Ao visitar esta vigia terá a possibilidade de conhecer as técnicas antigas da localização dos cachalotes, utilizadas pelos antigos baleeiros Açorianos durante a caça à baleia nas ilhas. Esta atividade terminou em 1986.

That is what happened, here in the Azores, regarding the whales and whaling. This activity is embedded in the DNA of the people from these islands, becoming that way a historic legacy of extreme importance to the Azorean Identity.
In this context, the urban requalification of the “Miradouro da Vigia da Furada”, where the lookout post operated near Ponta Garça lighthouse, conciliates the old and new purposes, which are both finding the whales but with very different endings.
Nowadays, it is an infrastructure dedicated to Whale Watching and also used for educational and cultural purposes, and also environmental awareness, for both the local communities and tourists. In this way, we aim to divulge the amazing Azorean marine wildlife.
By visiting the lookout post, you will have the possibility to learn about the old techniques and also try them, used by the former Azorean whalers, to locate the Sperm Whales. Whaling, here in the Azores, ended in 1986.
O vigia Filipe Ferreira desvendar-lhe-á todos os segredos do seu espantoso trabalho. Será desafiado a encontrar as baleias e os golfinhos através dos seus potentes binóculos e dar instruções através do rádio VHF e encaminhar as embarcações para as zonas de observação. Será certamente uma experiência inesquecível que lhe vai revelar os bastidores do whale watching.
Os baleeiros eram pessoas que faziam a sua vida normal como todas as outras. A única diferença é que aguardavam ansiosamente que o vigia os avisasse que havia cachalotes ao largo. Nesta altura, deixavam tudo o que estavam a fazer e, com ligeireza e grande coragem, dirigiam-se ao cais onde arriavam frágeis botes baleeiros, seguiam nesta grande aventura em busca das baleias.

You will be challenged to find whales and dolphins with his powerful binoculars, and then direct the vessels, via VHF radio, to the area where the animals were spotted. An unforgettable experience that will reveal to you the backstage of Whale Watching.
The whalers had normal lives like everyone else, the only difference was that they were always anxiously waiting the call from the lookout, telling them that the whales were spotted. At that moment, they would drop everything they were doing, with ease and great courage, and go to the docks where the fragile traditional whaling boats were, get them ready and then finally go on this big adventure called Whaling.
Atualmente não existem muitos botes baleeiros em boas condições de navegar na Região, sendo o “SENHORA DE FÁTIMA” o único bote baleeiro tradicional da caça à baleia existente na ilha de São Miguel totalmente recuperado. Este bote baleeiro, que pode ser visto na Marina de Vila Franca do Campo, é utilizado para fins educacionais, desportivos e culturais. É uma forma de deixar uma marca e garantir que este património com impacto tão importante na história dos Açores seja usufruído por todos. O “SENHORA DE FÁTIMA”, SG-98-B, está classificado como Património Baleeiros dos Açores.
Nowadays, there aren’t that many whaling boats in proper navigation conditions in the region, so that makes the restored whaling boat “SENHORA DE FÁTIMA” the only one existing in São Miguel in perfect conditions and fully operational. This whaling boat, which can be seen at the Marina of Vila Franca do Campo, is used for educational, cultural and sports purposes. It is a way to make a point and guarantee that this important part of the Azorean history and patrimony is enjoyed by everyone.
The whaling boat “SENHORA DE FÁTIMA”, SG – 98 – B, is classified as patrimony by the “Património Beleeiro dos Açores”.
