Geocache Description:

[LV]

Nēģu murdu tacis - tradicionāls un unikāls zvejas veids. Nēģi daudziem ir īpaša delikatese, taču nēģu zveja pasaulē ir maz izplatīta. Tikai Salacgrīvā mūsdienās īstai nēģu zvejai joprojām lieto murdu taci - unikālu zvejas paņēmienu ar daudzu gadsimtu vēsturi.

No tača upes straumē iegremdē ņēģu murdus un notiek zveja. Katru gadu pirms sezonas sākuma zvejnieki taci ierīko no jauna. To būvē pēc senajām metodēm no vairākus gadus gatavinātiem egļu kokmateriāliem.

The lamprey pod weir — a traditional and unique way of fishing. For many, lampreys are a special délicatesse, although lamprey fishing is little known in the world. Only Salacgrīva still uses the great pod weir for lamprey fishing — a unique fishing technique with a history, stretching back several centuries.

Lamprey pods are lowered into the river stream from the weir, and fishing occurs. Each year, before the start of the season, the fishermen rebuild the weir. It is built according to ancient methods, from spruce planks matured for several years. The weir supports are pounded into the river bottom with the aid of a kurķis (a special 16 kg hammer) and this action is called beating in the weir. In order to allow fishermen to walk along the weir, a 30-40 cm wide path is built along the top. No nails or screws are used in construction, only tiebacks. The weir is built along nearly the entire width of the river, but the pods are placed only along half of it. At one time, 70 pods are used for lamprey fishing — small ones and large ones. The small pods are placed in the evening and removed at dawn — in winter and in summer. The large pods are placed by the fishermen along the weir and are monitored by boat once the river is free of ice.  The lamprey catch is dependent on fishermen’s skills and nature itself. To acquire a good catch, the lamprey itself must come, of course. But that isn’t all — the proper west wind is needed, the proper water level and the water cannot be too bitter from fallen leaves, and many other conditions must be met. The lampreys are baited by weir for 6 months — from August until February. During the summer, being on the river is pleasant and romantic. However, in autumn and winter, fishing is a harsh battle to maintain the fishing location, because a weir destroyed by the elements can only be rebuilt the following summer. Storms can bring many piles down the Salaca, which can get caught in the weir, and the current destroys the weir in a trifle. In the same way, the soga — icy sludge in the river — can end this season’s lamprey fishing in the blink of an eye. When the river freezes over completely, the fishermen must care not only for holes in the ice to remove and replace the pods, but must also carefully make sure that the ice cap, in rising, does not lift out the weir’s supports and thus ruin it.

Fishermans know about cache, also they can answer to your questions and show you the lamprey pod weir
