[SV] Sedan 1922 är Åland en självstyrd region i Finland. När Finland blev självständigt 1917 ville 96 procent av den myndiga åländska befolkningen åter bli en del av Sverige, som det alltid hade varit före den ryska tiden 1809-1917. För att garantera att ålänningarna fortsättningsvis skulle få behålla sitt svenska språk och sin kultur beslutade Nationernas Förbund (idag Förenta Nationerna) för att Åland skulle få ett minoritetsskydd i form av självstyret. Självstyret är reglerat i Finlands självstyrelselag, en lag som hanteras grundlagsenligt. Finlands riksdag kan inte ändra i självstyrelselagen utan Ålands lagtings samtycke. Självstyrelselagen ger Åland rätt att stifta egna lagar inom en del områden. Genom självstyret har den Åländska befolkningen ett större skydd för sitt språk och sin kultur än många andra finlandssvenska minoriteter i resten av landet.
Självstyrelsegården, byggd 1978, inhyser bland annat det självstyrda Ålands styrande organ, Ålands lagting (motsvarigheten till riksdag/parlament) och Ålands landskapsregering.
[EN] Since 1922, Åland is a self-governing region in Finland. When Finland became independent 1917 a total of 96 percent of the Åland population (those with age of majority) wanted to once again be part of Sweden, as it had always been before the russian time 1809-1917. To guarantee that Åland would be able to maintain its Swedish language and its culture, the League of Nations (today United Nations) decided that Åland would get a minority protection in the form of the self-governance. The self-governance is regulated by the Finnish self-governance law, a law that is handled the same way as a constitutional law. The Finnish parliament cannot make changes in the self-governance law without the consent of the parliament of Åland. The self-governance law gives Åland the right to enact their own laws to some extent. Thanks to the self-governance the population and minority of Åland have a higher protection of its language and culture than many other minority groups of Swedish-speaking Finns on the Finnish mainland.
Självstyrelsegården (The Self-Governance Garden), built 1978, is the building where the governing functions of Åland is located; the Åland Parliament and the Government of Åland.
