A construção naval nos Açores terá tido início nos primórdios do povoamento.
Ao longo dos séculos a freguesia de Santo Amaro manteve-se por tradição como o principal estaleiro naval do arquipélago, uma das razões pelo qual aqui se implementou poderá ter a ver com a abundância e acesso fácil a madeira de grande qualidade nesta ilha.
Neste local pelas mãos dos hábeis mestres nasceram de disformes e retorcidas peças de madeira, elegantes botes, lanchas e traineiras, algumas bastante conhecidas e que ainda se encontram no activo, como por exemplo, os atuneiros da Frota Azul.
A construção em madeira decaiu muito nos últimos anos, uma das razões é a construção em fibra de vidro, e a outra é a protecção ao cedro do mato, restando apenas pequenas reparações em algumas embarcações de madeira.
A cache encontra-se junto ao porto e ao Museu da Construção Naval, e contém apenas o logbook.
