Near the Top (of Bear Mt.) Traditional Geocache

The cache is a roomy camo'ed lock&lock container.

This cache is placed under Bear Mountain Park Permit BM13-01.

The terrain rating assumes you are accessing the site via Perkins Drive, which is closed to vehicles from December through March. It may also close because of weather conditions as well. When it is not available, the cache is only accessible by a long, steep, (and in winter, icy) climb.

FTF goes to the patient Ovaron, with a very close STF to grschmid.

This beautiful park almost became the relocation site for Sing Sing prison in 1909, but for the intercession of conservationists (inspired by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission), and the contributions of a handful of wealthy contributors. The prison construction was removed and the park opened in 1913; steamboats brought thousands (and eventually millions) of people from New York City up the Hudson to enjoy the camping and the many hiking trails.

The park today has several popular features, including the Bear Mountain Inn, trailside museums and a zoo, and scenic Perkins Drive which takes you to the top of Bear Mt.

At the top is the Perkins Memorial Tower, an imposing stone structure built in 1934 whose 40 foot height provides stunning vistas to all points of the compass. 

The parking area for this cache is conveniently located immediately opposite the Perkins Memorial Tower. Take a moment to climb to the top of tower and enjoy the breathtaking views.
