Geocache Description:

Nice easy little cache here - should be ok as cache and dash. Wheelchair users may need assistance at GZ. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN PEN!

This cache is placed close to Buckfastleigh station which opened on 1st May 1872 on the branch line from Totnes to the stannary town of Ashburton some nine miles away. The line was used for goods mainly - agricultural, coal, wool, cider etc - along with local passengers. This line never really made a huge profit but was loved by all who used and traveled on it. In November 1958, before the infamous Dr Beeching wielded his axe, the line closed to passengers and four years later to freight. Soon after this, a group of enthusiastic businessmen decided to take over the line and run it for tourists and by 1969, services from Buckfastleigh to Totnes resumed - sadly the line to Ashburton was lost in 1971 with the expansion of the A38. Twenty years later and this wonderful railway became a registered charity and since then has gone from strength to strength collecting many accolades along the way including Heritage Railway of the Year in 2007 and then carried 100,000 passengers in 2009. There is a wealth of locomotives here both steam and diesel and the staff are very friendly and informative.
