A surprising special place in an ordinary village.
Trahoni is one of those places you go through on the way to somewhere else. It is practical though, as it has the usual kiosk, pharmacy, petrol station, a couple of bakeries and a Bank of Cyprus with ATM. For those on public transport, the number 19 bus from Limassol Old Hospital station terminates very close to the cache and returns 10 minutes later.
Two of Trahoni's interesting points to me are a load of really interesting rock formations on the right as you enter the village from the East, and this little gem that I stumbled upon by accident a few years back.
Like all the other cave churches of it’s kind this was used in times of oppression and would have been much less beautified and exposed than it is now, you would probably have had to fight your way through shrubbery to even see the entrance.
It's called Σπήλαιο της Παναγίας - Grotto of Our Lady. Above the door I can make out some words: "more honourable" and "surpasses" "the cherubim" and "seraphim" on the left plaque. On the right plaque I think it's something along the lines of "Mary, our ever immaculate Lady, Holy Bride, Mother of God". But my Greek is pretty hopeless and Google Translate doesn't cope with ancient Greek very well so all improvements on my rough translation are welcome.
This little church is quite surprising once you're inside. You'll need a torch even in daylight as it's pitch dark in the back there, there are lights but I couldn't figure out which switch did what. The cache is outside the church and although it's a micro it's a round flat one about 6cm diameter x 4 cm deep, so room for some little swaps. Although there are a few houses opposite, you should be ok not to be seen if you keep your head down. Watch out for snakes, they like rocky, sandy places.
